Threads is reportedly experimenting with a new feature

Threads is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to create posts that automatically disappear after a set time, up to 24 hours. Replies to these posts will also be deleted once the original post expires. This feature is currently being tested by a limited group of users, and it is not yet clear when it will be available to everyone.

Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that this temporary post feature is being tested with select users, following earlier news in June that it was being developed internally. According to developer and tipster Alessandro Paluzzi, who showcased the feature, posts have a visible countdown timer that runs until zero, at which point the post and its replies vanish.

The feature also removes quote posts (reposts with added quotes) when the timer for the original post expires. These temporary posts will not appear on Threads’ fediverse network, such as Mastodon, due to technical constraints preventing deletion across different platforms.

While the potential applications of this feature may be niche, it could prove useful for content with a limited relevance period, such as live commentary during events. Details on whether users can set specific times within the 24-hour limit remain unclear, and additional information will likely emerge once the feature is more widely released.
