PM Modi Apologizes for Collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Statue at Rajkot Fort
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday apologized for the recent collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg district. Addressing a public gathering at Palghar, Modi expressed deep regret over the incident, acknowledging the hurt sentiments of those who revere the Maratha emperor.
“For me and my colleagues, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a king; he is a revered deity,” Modi said. “I extend my sincere apologies to everyone who worships Shivaji Maharaj. I understand their pain.”
The 35-foot statue, inaugurated by PM Modi on December 4 last year, collapsed on August 26, leading to criticism and a heated political exchange in poll-bound Maharashtra. Initially, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attributed the collapse to heavy winds, while Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the Navy, not the state government, was responsible for the statue’s construction.
In a move to mitigate the backlash, Shinde later said he would not hesitate to apologize repeatedly for the incident if necessary.
